Becoming Like Little Children

Becoming Like Little Children

In Matthew 18:3, Jesus delivers a profound and challenging teaching in response to His disciples' question about who would be the greatest in the kingdom, this verse cuts to the heart of what true discipleship requires...

“Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven”.

Jesus' disciples wanted to be great. Not just great, but the greatest! Their focus was still on themselves. Their self pride, purpose and own power.

But Jesus teaches that is not the right attitude he is looking for. Instead, He invites us to embrace childlike qualities of humility, trust, and complete dependence.

Jesus is texting that His Kingdom is a family. Where He is the Father, the head of the household and his followers are not like co-father's, instead we are the children of the house.

This is the essence of the verse. To enter the kingdom of heaven, we must surrender our lives fully to Christ, joining Him in purpose and submitting our will to His. It means letting go of pride, ambition, and the desire to be great and in control of our own destiny.

We are to become utterly dependent on Him, trusting that He will supply all our needs, just as a little child looks to a loving parent without worry or reservation.

A young child has no illusions of self sufficiency. They rely entirely on their parents for food, protection, guidance, and love. They do not earn their place in the family through achievements or status, they simply belong because they are loved and cared for.

Jesus emphasizes that this dependence is not optional. Without this humble, trusting posture, we cannot even see or enter the kingdom of God.

As children naturally accept provision, protection, and guidance we must receive God's grace and Lordship in the same way without pretense, without holding back.

In a world that prizes independence and self reliance, Jesus' words are revolutionary. They remind us that the path to greatness in God's eyes begins with humility and total reliance on Him.

When we surrender in this childlike way, we discover true freedom, security, and intimacy with our Heavenly Father.

May we heed Jesus' call today.

Turn from self-sufficiency, become like little children, and step fully into the kingdom He offers.
