Does it Matter What Jesus Looked Like?
Many people say, “I do not care what Jesus looked like,” but it actually does matter because Scripture identifies Him as a Jew. If Jesus were not Jewish, then He could not be the promised Messiah foretold throughout the Old Testament.
God promised that the Messiah would come through Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Judah, and David. Jesus fulfilled those prophecies precisely because He was born a Jew from the Middle East. Matthew begins by emphasizing this very fact, calling Him “the son of David, the son of Abraham.”
Jesus was not European, nor was He a black African from sub Saharan Africa. He was a Jewish man from Judea. Historically, first century Jews were Middle Eastern Semitic people with olive to light brown skin, dark hair, and dark eyes. They looked similar to many modern Jewish and Middle Eastern people today.
We can still see what Jewish ethnicity generally looks like in people such as Benjamin Netanyahu, Adam Sandler, Gal Gadot, Natalie Portman, Oscar Isaac, and many rabbis and Israeli citizens. Of course, individuals vary in shade and features, but the overall ethnic appearance remains recognizable.
The Bible also suggests Jesus looked like an ordinary Jewish man of His day. Judas had to identify Him with a kiss because He did not physically stand out from the surrounding Jewish population. Isaiah even prophesied that the Messiah would have no unusual outward appearance that would make Him remarkable.
Throughout history, cultures have often recreated Jesus in their own image. Europeans painted Him as European, while others portray Him as black or Asian. But these are cultural depictions, not historical reality. The issue is not racism or ethnic pride. The issue is biblical and historical truth.
Jesus was a Jew. He looked like a Jew. That matters because prophecy matters, and the Messiah had to come exactly as God promised.
