The Journey from Paradise to the Father's Presence
In the heart of the earth, as Scripture indicates, there once existed a place known as paradise, a compartment within Sheol where the righteous of old awaited the fulfillment of God's promises. When our Lord Jesus died upon the cross, He descended there, just as He assured the repentant thief beside Him, "Today you will be with me in paradise." This moment occurred under the old covenant, where faithful souls found comfort in that realm until the Messiah completed His work.
Yet Jesus did not remain there. His path led onward, for the Father awaited Him in heaven. After His resurrection, when Mary Magdalene reached out to Him in joy, He gently said, "Do not touch me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father." These words carry profound meaning. They reveal that the Father dwells not in paradise but in the heavenly realm above. Jesus had to ascend fully to present Himself before the Father, completing the victory over death and sin.
This ascension marks a glorious transition. Our Lord now sits at the right hand of the Father, as the Scriptures affirm, exalted in triumph. By leading captivity captive, as Ephesians describes, He brought the saints of old with Him from that earthly paradise into the Father's presence. What a beautiful fulfillment of hope for those who trusted in the coming Redeemer.
For believers today, this changes everything. Paradise in the center of the earth, once a place of waiting, now stands vacant in its former purpose. The saints have been taken home. When we die, we no longer descend to Sheol's paradise but go directly to where the Father is, to be with Christ in heaven. The barrier has been removed through His finished work. We enter the very presence of our loving God, united with the risen Savior who prepared this way for us.
This truth brings such comfort and assurance. The old waiting place gave way to the open embrace of the Father, all because Jesus descended, conquered, and ascended. May we rest in that promise, knowing our departure from this life leads straight into eternal fellowship with Him.
