Understanding the Godhead: One God in Three Persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

Understanding the Godhead: One God in Three Persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

I. GOD IS ONE

Deuteronomy 6:4 – “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.”

Isaiah 45:5 – “I am the LORD, and there is no other; besides me there is no God.”

Truth:

The Bible clearly teaches that there is only one God.

II. God Is Triune

1. The Father is God

1 Corinthians 8:6 – “...there is but one God, the Father…”

2. The Son is God

John 1:1,14 – “The Word was with God, and the Word was God… The Word became flesh…”

Hebrews 1:8 – “But about the Son he says, ‘Your throne, O God, will last forever…’”

John 20:28 – Thomas said to Jesus, “My Lord and my God!”

3. The Holy Spirit is God

Acts 5:3-4 – Peter says lying to the Holy Spirit is lying to God.

2 Corinthians 3:17 – “Now the Lord is the Spirit…”

Truth:

Each are fully God, not just a part of God.

III. THE THREE ARE DISTINCT PERSONS

Matthew 3:16–17 – Jesus is baptized, the Spirit descends, and the Father speaks.

Matthew 28:19 – “Baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.”

2 Corinthians 13:14 – “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit…”

Truth:

The Father is not the Son, the Son is not the Spirit, and the Spirit is not the Father—each Person is distinct, yet all are one God.

IV. SUMMARY

There is one God.

God is revealed in three distinct Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

All three are fully and equally God, yet not three gods—one in essence.

2 Corinthians 13:14

“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.”
